Modrič Cave is located near Jasenice-Maslenica, about 35 km northeast of Zadar, and holds a unique status among the caves of Velebit. Protected as a geomorphological natural monument, this cave extends for 829 meters and captivates visitors with its pristine, untouched natural beauty. The temperature inside remains a constant 17°C year-round.
The cave was discovered in 1985 by speleologist Silvijo Legović. While passing through the area during a strong bora wind, he noticed an opening in the rock.
Detecting an airflow, he suspected the presence of hidden passages and large chambers. After widening the fissure just enough to enter, he unveiled this remarkable cave.
Modrič Cave stands out for its natural beauty and authentic character. It has retained its original appearance, untouched by human modifications. Unlike most caves adapted for tourists with artificial lighting and constructed pathways, Modrič Cave preserves its authenticity; there are no concrete paths, spotlights, or fences; its charm comes solely from its natural features.
As you explore, every step reveals new mysterious corridors and chambers adorned with formations—stalactites, stalagmites, and a variety of other speleothems—evoking a sense of entering a fantasy world. Inside, the habitat supports blind crustaceans and spiders, perfectly adapted to a life in complete darkness. The cave also hosts snails and, occasionally, bats.
Surprisingly, a small stalagmite formed approximately 420,000 years ago, testifying to the long-term natural processes shaping the caves. In the second channel of the Modrič Cave, speleologists discovered fossil remains of a Bronze Age human, dating back more than 4,000 years.
Additionally, pottery and remains of cave bears were found, dating from the last Ice Age, between 15,000 and 20,000 years old.
