WATER (HIDROLOGY)

Vode (ili hidrologija)

The most significant and largest river within Velebit Nature Park is the Zrmanja, which also forms the southern boundary of Velebit. The Zrmanja River is 69 km long, and its water is utilized for the water supply of the city of Zadar. The Lika and Gacka are sinking (karst) rivers that flow to the east of the park; most of their flow is diverted for the Senj Hydroelectric Power Plant, while a smaller part sinks and flows underground toward coastal springs and vruljas (submarine springs). On the western slopes of Velebit, principal surface watercourses include the torrential streams Kolan, Duboka Draga, Virine, and the Krupa, which flows into the Zrmanja. On the eastern slopes, important streams include Tisovac, Popovača, Otešica, Suvaja, Krušnica, Radučica, and Ričica.

Regarding standing waters within Velebit Nature Park, three artificial (reservoir) lakes are notable, all part of the Velebit Hydroelectric Power Plant system and located in the southeast part of the park: Lake Štikada (holding 13.6 million m³ of water) near Gračac, Lake Obsenica (Sv. Rok) near Lovinac, connected by canal to the Ričica River leading to Štikada and Lake Razovac situated on the Zrmanja River ( Croatian waters, 2020; Biondić and Biondić, 2014).
